Most SEO advice obsesses over keywords and backlinks. Both matter — but there’s a quieter ranking factor sitting right under your nose: how fast your website actually loads. Google calls the measurement Core Web Vitals, and for a lot of businesses it’s the cheapest SEO win going.

What Core Web Vitals actually measure

Core Web Vitals are three real-world numbers Google collects from people using your site. They’re less about raw speed and more about how the page feels to a human:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — how long until the main thing on the page shows up. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — how quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks. Aim for under 200 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — how much the page jumps around as it loads. Aim for under 0.1.

Why Google cares (and you should too)

Search is a competition for attention, and Google doesn’t want to send people to slow, janky pages. Core Web Vitals are a confirmed ranking signal — not the biggest one, but a genuine tiebreaker. The bigger story is conversion: every second of load time quietly costs you sales. Fast sites get more pages per visit, lower bounce, and more revenue from the exact same traffic.

The fixes that move the needle

You don’t need to rebuild everything. In our experience a handful of changes do most of the work:

  • Compress and right-size images — they’re the usual LCP culprit. Serve modern formats and never ship a 3000px image into a 600px slot.
  • Reserve space for media so nothing jumps as it loads — that kills CLS.
  • Trim and defer JavaScript. Most sites ship far more than they use; less script means snappier INP.
  • Lean on a good host and a CDN so files arrive from somewhere close to the visitor.
